Self Publishing
There are many reasons an author self publishes their work. I self published my first book 'Try!' as an ebook as an experiment, plus I had been thwarted by some publishers who believed that the rugby league theme was not something that would sell on a national level.
Some self publishing options aren't too expensive, others are, but all require work on behalf of the author to promote the book.
Any book, whether self published or not still needs to be something that people want to read and of course be well written.
Some self publishing companies offer artwork/illustrators or you can approach someone yourself - although this option will be expensive - only natural as illustrating a book - whether a picture book or illustrated chapter book is an extremely labour intensive task!
My advice?
Like any manuscript, ensure yours is the best it can be - participate in writing courses, get feedback whenever you can (competitions which offer feedback are great), join a writing group, attend writing festivals and book publishing consults.
If you do self publish and you have published your book as either an ebook or in printed form don't think that the hard work is over!
Now you have to tell the world!
Firstly, you need it reviewed (see links below)
Then the publicity starts - have an official launch - your local public library may agree to host or a nearby bookshop.
Invest in some author business cards and bookmarks which can usually be sourced online.
Consider an online book tour - there are several writing blogs which may be interested - all you have to do is ask! Offer a copy of the book as a competition prize.
Be prepared - write your own 'blurb' of your book, have good quality high resolution images of yourself (a head shot) and your book cover. Does your book have a 'backstory'? Why did you write it? Where did the idea come from? Depending on the story, you may even consider approaching tour local paper to conduct an interview - especially as a lead up to your book launch.
Do your homework - see what other authors do to promote their new books.
Use social media - facebook and twitter are great ways to get the word out about your book and your launch.
